ENGINEERING MECHANICS

 

In general

The Engineering Mechanics (EM) program aims at training students with professional competencies, soft skills, ethic qualities and good health. Students are equipped with solid base of scientific- technical and social science knowledge, capacity of independently solving technical problems, ability to develop research in engineering mechanics field, lifelong learning capabilities to meet the needs of high-quality workforce of the country. The training objectives, consistent with the mission of Ho Chi Minh City University of technology and Faculty of Applied Science, are to produce high quality human resources in the field of Engineering Mechanics majoring in EM and the graduates will be effectively serving the economic development of the country.

Specific objectives: 

Objective 1 - Knowledge in depth: providing the students with basic and advanced knowledge in the area of mechanics, mathematics and programming for solving practical problems related to engineering mechanics. It is the necessary condition to promote students creativity in their further professional activities, pursue higher level education such as master and Ph.D. degree, lifelong learning ability and self- study

Objective 2 - Knowledge in breadth: providing the students with a wide knowledge, so that they have ability in researching, experimental operation and solving problems related to engineering mechanics, quality assessment and damage forecasting of machinery or buildings. Moreover, they can apply the knowledge to design, survey and forecast phenomenon related to mechanical problems

Objective 3 - Professionalism: Graduate Students have ability to compute and simulate engineering mechanic problems through specialized software tools such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, and MATLAB. Furthermore, they also have vital communication skills, teamwork spirit, professional attitude and ethics, ability to work in a modern, complex and lifelong learning environment.

Objective 4 - English skills: English skills are required for students in their academic, research activities, communication in business, especially in reading comprehension for global work environment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: 

a)   Have ability to apply the knowledge of mathematics through differential equations, variation equations, Finite Element Method (FEM), Probability Theory & Statistics, Numerical Analysis, Fundamentals of Applied Mathematics and Statistics & Data Analysis, General Physics and General Chemistry to give solutions in mechanical problems.

b)    Have ability to perform virtual experiments on computers in the field of engineering mechanics, civil engineering, biomechanical engineering … through specialized software such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, DYNAFORM, DEFORM, FLUENT, SOLIDWORKS, SAP, etc. and ability to analyze results and experimental data, assess quality and forecast damage of machinery or buildings. Moreover, they can apply the knowledge to survey and forecast phenomenon related to mechanical problems.

c)    Have ability to  design a system, a component or process of computation and simulation to adapt the demands of mechanical problems through knowledge about Fundamental of Automation, Engineering Design, Project work of Engineering Design, Project work of Simulation and specialized CAD software such as AUTOCAD, CATIA, INVENTOR …

d)    Have ability to work effectively in teams involved engineering mechanics as Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Environmental Engineering.

e)     Have ability to determine the mechanical problems and solve them by simulation techniques and compute with application software, programming software as mentioned above.

f)      Have good professional knowledge, responsibilities in work and ethics in research, good understanding in Vietnamese and public international law.

g)     Have ability to work independently, communicate effectively, write reports, develop, interpret, and express ideas through written communication, good teamwork skill after graduation and good English for communication, science and technology for global work environment.

h)    Have knowledge about environmental awareness and society; understand the impact of engineering solutions in the context of economic, environmental and global society.

i)      Have self-study abilities to pursue higher professional knowledge, lifelong learning and higher academic degree such as master and Ph.D. degree to satisfy the socio-economic needs.

j)     Have knowledge of world contemporary issues, ability in researching, experimental operation and solving problems related to engineering mechanics, quality assessment and damage forecasting of machinery or buildings. Moreover, they can apply the knowledge to design, survey and forecast phenomenon related to mechanical problems.

k)    Have ability to apply the modern technology tools, equipped with knowledge and basic skills to utilize computer software in the computation and simulation applications for engineering mechanics, master mathematical, programming and simulation tools, have engineering knowledge to solve practical problems related to engineering mechanics.

Career Opportunities: 

-   The Institutes of Research and Design (Institutes of Mechanics, Traffic Technical Institute, Institutes of Machinery or Exploitation and Transportation of Petroleum … ).

-   The software programming centers on the mechanical problems.

-   Teaching and research in universities.

-   The technical inspection office of plants or companies which have built demands for new or improved products regularly. 

-   The Agencies of Standards, Metrology and Quality. 

Engineers specialized in engineering mechanics are trained to satisfy the demands for practical skills in the industry: 

     - Enhancing the quality of design and verification for mechanical structures.
     - Computing and simulating mechanical structures in high technology, building  virtual laboratories.
     - Designing and manufacturing automatic and metrological equipments: robot, automatic production line, transport etc.
